Why use a COUNTERBORE vs. an END MILL? 

  • Flat Bottom: Avoids traditional dish left by end mill. Spots effectively on irregular surfaces; Avoids walking as is common with spot drills or drills. 
  • Full Cylindrical Margin & Back Taper: Not side cutting. Will not grab and deflect like an endmill, holding its position better. Reduces chatter and machining marks, improving finish.
  • Slow Helix with Low Rake: Avoids part engagement helping to control finish.
