Benefits of High Helix Geometry:

  • High helix end mills are typically defined as possessing a helix greater than 30° (standard).

  • The helix angle determines the axial (along centerline) and radial (perpendicular to centerline) forces acted upon the mill as it removes material from the workpiece.

  • As the helix increases, the cutting edge length of engagement is lessened, resulting in an increased axial force component and a decreased radial force component.

  • Increased axial forces allow more effective chip evacuation and an improved finish on the workpiece.

  • Decreased radial forces reduce tool deflection and avoid tool breakage.

  • These features make high helix end mills suited for thin walled parts and other similarly demanding applications.

My tool distributor JD Tool in NY gave me some of these to try about two years ago and now when ever I need an very small aluminum end mill I buy these. I run them to Harvey Tool's recommendations when able and they give me very good results. Our fastest spindle is only 15000 RPM and most of our machines are 12000 RPM but yet we do very well with these tools. I would like to see more sizes and most of all more lengths and corner Radius. Stock is good on these when ever I need them.
